La designer montréalaise Valérie Dumaine (1977–2025) s’est distinguée par son style minimaliste et structuré, de même que par ses choix éthiques en faveur de l’environnement, et ce, tout au long de ses 20 ans de carrière. Ardente défenseure de la « slow fashion », elle s’est fait un devoir de créer des collections intemporelles entièrement fabriquées au Canada à partir de matières à la fois durables et confortables.
Diplômée en design de mode au Collège LaSalle en 1997, elle effectue un stage à Londres, puis travaille comme illustratrice, patroniste et designer pour diverses entreprises montréalaises. Après un séjour marquant à Berlin, elle fonde sa griffe éponyme en 2003. Au plus fort de sa carrière, ses vêtements sont vendus dans plus de quarante points de vente en Amérique du Nord et au-delà. Le Bauhaus, le constructivisme et le cinéma des années 1960 à 1980 comptent parmi ses principales sources d’inspiration.
Parallèlement à ses propres collections, la designer réalise plusieurs pièces uniques, dont une robe conçue en 2010 avec l’artiste verrier Gérald Collard pour l’événement Verre couture, ainsi qu’une création spéciale pour la Biennale internationale du lin de Portneuf en 2009. Elle s’associe au cinéaste Karl Lemieux, pour le 10e anniversaire de sa griffe, et crée des pièces en marge de l’exposition La planète mode de Jean Paul Gaultier du Musée des beaux-arts de Montréal, en 2011.
Créatrice engagée, elle participe à divers événements philanthropiques, tout en offrant une portion de ses bénéfices à des organismes œuvrant pour l’inclusion, la santé des femmes, la justice sociale et le bien-être animal. Elle soutient aussi la relève dans le domaine de la mode, notamment par le mentorat et des stages d’apprentissage.

The Montreal-born designer Valérie Dumaine (1977–2025) was known for her minimalist, structured style, as well as for her ethical and sustainable approach. An ardent advocate of “slow fashion,” she made it her mission during her 20-year career to create timeless collections made entirely in Canada from materials that were both durable and comfortable.
After graduating in fashion from LaSalle College in 1997, Valérie Dumaine completed an internship in London, then worked as an illustrator, patternmaker, and designer for various Montreal companies. A sojourn in Berlin in 2003 had a significant impact on her trajectory. She founded her eponymous brand later that year. In 2004, her first collection was launched. At the height of her career, her clothes were sold in over 40 locations across North America and beyond. Her main sources of inspiration included Bauhaus, Constructivism, and cinema from the 1960s to 1980s.
In addition to her own collections, Valérie Dumaine created several exclusive pieces, including a dress designed with glass artist Gérald Collard for the 2010 edition of Verre Couture, as well as a special creation for the Biennale Internationale du Lin de Portneuf in 2009. She collaborated with filmmaker Karl Lemieux for the 10th anniversary of her clothing line, and created pieces in connection with The Fashion World of Jean Paul Gaultier exhibition at the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts in 2011.
Valérie Dumaine was highly involved in charitable work. She participated in various philanthropic events, while donating a portion of her sales to organizations working for diversity and inclusion, women’s health, social justice, and animal welfare. Throughout her career, she supported the next generation of fashion designers, notably through mentoring and apprenticeships.
